Indigenous Water Crisis Editorial & Infographic

Title Page

Editorial Page

Infographic Page

For this piece, the goal was to create a three page Editorial, including a detailed Infographic, regarding the Indigenous Water Crisis.

I wanted the main focus to be based around water; how lakes, rivers and other bodies of water hold a strong connection for many indigenous communities. It’s the connection to the earth and life all around us.

Using a combination of traditional watercolour art pieces, paper cutouts and digital editing software, I was able to create a design that showcased a balanced flow that would help guide the readers eye through the article from title page, through the editorial, and ending on the infographic page, into a glass of water, symbolizing how every drop of water is important. I used Photoshop to turn up the richness of the colours and warping them just slightly so that it left me with more space to add in text, images, etc.

I used Myriad Variable Concept (Bold SemiExtended) as my Title Page font, & body for the Infographic, Miller Banner as my subheads & pull quote, footer and citations, and Ernestine Pro for my body copy in the Editorial. These choices were to create a clean, almost descriptive appearance for all 3 pages, without making it too decorative. And the title font choice was to make it bold enough to catch your eye, while not being too overpowering (not punch-in-the-face-bold, if that makes sense.)

Overall, I am very happy with how the finished results turned out. Some parts of the watercolour designs, I will humbly admit, I may have gone a bit overboard. However I believe it helped achieve the goal of this assignment: to inform people about a very serious subject with an article design that is unique, creative and eye-catching.
